{Book Review:} Wild and Free by Jess Connelly and Hayley Morgan

My Review:
Have you ever wanted to feel free?

Ms. Connolly and Ms. Morgan have written a powerful book about learning to live wild and free. They remind us of our identity in Christ while delivering a bold message. Their book is a lot like a call to arms. A call for us to wake up and start living the "wild" life we were called to. I really enjoyed the overall message of this title.

The fact is, we need more women boldly preaching the truth. Now I can't say I agreed with everything said in this book, but I did for the most part. This book encouraged me and nudged me forward to live wild and free. Who doesn't want to live free? Who doesn't want to passionately follow God's call on your life? This book emboldened me to charge forward, to strive to grow in my walk with Christ. A verse they shared in the book puts it so very well, "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14 (AMP)

I encourage you to get this book. I encourage you to get this book and read it. Ponder and meditate on what you read. Search the scriptures for yourself. Seek truth and you will find it. Ms. Connelly and Ms. Morgan pour out their hearts desire and are with you every page. If you desire to feel free, to take off the shackles of religion and step into His freedom for you, then what are you waiting on? Take that first step!

{Book Review:} How to Catch a Prince by Rachel Hauck

My Review:

An awesome, beautiful release from Hauck! 

How to Catch a Prince is like watching your favorite chick flick on a rainy (or snowy, as the case may be) day. It's the kind of story that even if you think you see something coming, you read on to see how the characters will face the challenge. Why read on? Because there's a fair chance they'll mess up. We mess up too. That's why we like them so well. We can relate to them. This is but one of the many things about Hauck's latest release that had me glued to the pages. I wasn't always right in my "predictions", which isn't a bad thing. I was glad to watch Corina and Stephen both grow in their struggles. 

Something I just recently became particular about in novels is a strong positive theme or message and Hauck accomplishes that in a lovely manner. Hmm, I don't want to spoil the beauty of it so I suppose I'll be vague. Honestly, I couldn't see the story without that element. It's weaved so carefully in with everything else it simply belongs. In addition, the theme itself is fresh when compared with novels I've read in the past. Is it in actuality all that new? No. But the presentation changes a lot. 

All in all, I highly encourage you to check out How to Catch a Prince. You'll be in for a beautiful story with darling characters and a lovely theme. I didn't know I would enjoy the story as much as I did, but it definitely beats out Once Upon a Prince for my favorite in the series. If you love cute, endearing stories and characters this book will be a good fit for you. ;-)

Princess Ever After by Rachel Hauck {Litfuse Blog Tour!}

My Review:
A lovely, wonderful story from Hauck!!

It should go without saying that I LOVED Once Upon a Prince. I have had to endure staring at Princess Ever After on my review stack for some time now, and I was so glad to slip into its pages. Once again I was completely wowed by Hauck on all the minor details used to make up the bigger picture. I can't imagine all the research she did on royals and such, but it made everything almost tangible.

Oh, Reggie is an amazing lead. She's down-to-earth, funny, and incredibly relatable. More than once I giggled and snorted at her remarks or inner thoughts. That being said, I wish the story was longer! I loved her faith, albeit shaky at times, and watching her find her place in the world was such a delight. In some ways, Reggie's story reminded me of The Princess Diaries movies. If I had to choose between the two, there's no competition. I prefer Princess Ever After hands down.

Tanner was an interesting lead. I liked that he wasn't portrayed as some perfect hero, but instead as a man with several blemishes in his past, and when his mistakes resurfaced, he didn't shirk from his responsibilities. I liked it when Reggie called him out on his tendency to beat himself up. If she hadn't, someone else would have!

This was such a lovely story to start out my week with. Romantics, fairy-tale lovers, and royalty admirers combined will enjoy this one and it's predecessor. I recommend this book to readers fifteen and older. :-)

{Book Review:} Outcasts by Jill Williamson

(Before I start the post, I want to take a moment to celebrate the fact that Writings of Rosie has hit 100 followers!! Thank you all very, very, much! All the praise, honor, and glory to the One Who made it all possible!)

My Review:
There is no easy way to explain my utter excitement about reading and reviewing Outcasts over the internet.

I was "captivated" by Captives and thus the bar was set high for Outcasts, but to my great delight Ms. Williamson came through! Every time I assumed to know how the book would end I found myself wrong! I truly did not know what was going to happen (I still don't, actually. lol!), and I love that. Ms. Williamson has a great, realistic setting that draws you in and holds you prisoner. I can't imagine all the thought that went into making the Safe Lands reality in her imagination.

Oh, and the characters were wonderful! Though, I admit, I was slightly disappointed that there were fewer references to The Princess Bride, however, this didn't stop me from enjoying Levi and Jemma's banter. I may, and probably am, be in the minority on this one, but I am wary of Ciddah. I suppose I'll have to withhold final judgement until I've read the next book. :-) Shaylinn remains my favorite character of all.

Those who have read the first in this series will certainly love this follow up. The cover for Outcasts is simply beautiful. I love the different colors and how they blend together. This sequel raises the stakes and pushes our beloved characters closer to their destination, whether internal or external. All in all, a great story- one for my keeper shelf!

I highly recommend this series to young adult Christians who enjoy other popular dystopians, my only caution to newer readers is in both Captives and Outcasts there is some minor content thanks to Omar and simply the crude ways the Safe Landers are trying to stay afloat. I recommend to those ages fifteen and older.

{Book Review:} The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson

My Review:
Another excellent fairytale retelling from Dickerson!

I have been looking forward to Valten's tale ever since I read the final pages of The Fairest Beauty, and I was not disappointed in the least! Set two years after the closing of Gabe and Sophie's story, Valten has just returned home after a long absence. He meets a beautiful, charming, girl in the marketplace and even after so brief a meeting, he finds his heart drawn to her somehow.

I love Valten's integrity and his chivalry. He's simply the kind of hero you want to root for. Another character I really loved is Gisela. She's sweet, compassionate and has somehow managed to ignore or rebuff all the filthy lies thrown at her for almost a decade. The two together are an excellent pair.

If there's one thing that, as a writer, struck me, it's that nothing ever happened easily in this story. I don't want to give anything away, but it did seem like if something could go wrong it did. Though it sounds crazy, I like it when characters are faced with a challenge. After all, what is a story without an impossible task?

To sum up, I love what Dickerson did with her own Cinderella tale. I also enjoy any chance Dickerson offers to revisit Valten's family, and I hope we'll see them again. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great fairytale retelling with a Christian twist.

{Book Review:} Last Light by Terri Blackstock

My Review:
A thrilling concept and suspenseful plot!

Last Light disappointed me. I loved Blackstock's Intervention series, but this one just didn't do it for me. There are many reasons I felt so, but I'll get to them later. Throughout Last Light we read from the perspectives of Jeff, Kay, Doug, and Deni Branning and perhaps the villain once. Honestly, this family is relatively broken and if it wasn't for the power outage, I don't see how they could have been a happy family. Speaking of the power outage, a lot of people say it's reminiscent of the TV show Revolution. I have not watched the show so I cannot vouch for it; however, Last Light was originally published in '05, so it came first.

The power was hardly out for a day and people turned into savage maniacs. The cause of the said outage was supposedly a product of something in the atmosphere. Not a realistic viable option, in my opinion, nonetheless this outage knocked out everything, and I do mean everything. Cars, generators- even brand new ones, watches, etcetera. It's an event so extreme people call it an act of God. I strongly disagree with that, but that's a topic for another blog post.

It is very evident the time and effort Blackstock put into crafting this city and what it would be like with no electricity. For that, at least, I commend her. Her characters on the other hand need some work. Deni is such a brat. She whines, she complains, and I didn't like her at all. Alhough she has a "come to Jesus" moment later on in the book, it didn't read real, if that makes any sense. As for the rest of the Brannings, I found it hard to relate to any of them.

I won't be making an effort to read the rest of the series. If, after this review, your interest is piqued; I recommend Last Light to ages sixteen and older due to some crude content involving the villain but as an overall good read I don't recommend it.

Back Before Dark by Tim Shoemaker

My Review:
An exciting sequel to Code of Silence!

Once again we return to northern Illinois to the adventurous world of Cooper, Gordy, and Hiro. I hadn't really taken a look at the back cover in a few weeks, so I dove straight into the book unaware of what was going to happen. Within pages, the new mystery and thrill had begun.

In this installment, Lunk has officially been added to Coop's circle of friends. He is a great addition to the group in Back Before Dark primarily because in the long absence of Gordy, Coop needed someone. Lunk really made an effort to change and I adored his loyalty to Coop. While he still has some personal flaws, he is a very interesting character to read about.

Hiro was and is my favorite character so far in the series. She reminds me a lot of myself in many ways. I like how Shoemaker has made Hiro the "Jiminy Cricket" of the group. She's very by the book and probably the most responsible. I constantly wanted to high-five Hiro's efforts to keep Coop in line.

I would hate to say too much and spoil such a great mystery book, so I'll keep this brief. Shoemaker does an excellent job with the pacing of events, character development, and plot depth. I recommend this book to boys, although girls will enjoy it too, anywhere from 12+. There is a dark undertone mentioned concerning Gordy's abduction, so parents might want to take a look at this first. I look forward to the next book in the series.

My Review:
A refreshing, delightful, read from Miss Hauck!

Ever since my lovely blogging friends began posting their reviews, I grew more and more eager to dive into the pages of Once Upon a Prince. Let me tell you, when I finally did I couldn't put it down. This novel went beyond all my expectations. She even surprised me at the end! Anyone who can accomplish that needs to pat themselves on the back.

Susanna is a planner. She feels safe knowing how her life is going to turn out. Until her world flips upside down. Miss Hauck accomplished this change in Susanna very well, in my opinion. It didn't come too fast or too slow but instead it was portrayed very realistically. Susanna felt so real just in general with her quirks. That's something I really liked.

As for the prince... well, he is something special. :-) I was pleasantly surprised by his strong faith. I also liked how willing he was to sacrifice his happiness if it came to that. And, oh my goodness, his accent! It literally pops off the page!

In sum, Miss Hauck has penned an amazing story. Her writing flows right off the page and into my imagination. Her characters appear lifelike and are relatable, something very important to me. This will be one I will reread in the future, just for the fun of it. Plus, she kept all the romance very clean, which impressed me beyond belief. I can't wait until Book Two!

My Review:
This Christian Dystopian novel is one you won't want to miss!

Captives introduces us to a whole new world in 2088. The Safe Lands practically pop out of the page and take you in. Jill did such a wonderful job making it believable and realistic with amazing detail. Speaking of The Safe Lands, as "safe" as it sounds, it really isn't. The place is actually rather quite terrifying the more you learn about it. I don't blame the Elders who said no to The Safe Lands.

The primary characters we focus on in the novel are Mason, Omar, Levi, and Shaylinn. Truthfully, I hadn't anticipated the many points of view, but it worked really well! It opened the door for me to look at what was going on through different pairs of eyes, who all had unique ways of looking at their circumstances.

Confession time. I am very partial to Levi's and Shaylinn's points of view. I found Levi likable primarily for his loyalty to his family and friends. His determination to put his own life on the line to get them back. His quoting Westley from The Princess Bride... *cough* Anyway, overall he earned his spot as one of my favorite characters. ;-)

As a result of The Safe Lands ungodly lifestyle there is many instances revolving around a character, whose name I shall not disclose. No instances are explicit, in fact, Jill handles all of it really well in a way with few details. Nonetheless, be advised.

My personal conclusion? This book is fantastic! And the ending has left me eager for the sequel!

Book Review: The Bare Naked Truth by Bekah Hamrick Martin

I'll be frank, this book covers some uncomfortable topics. However, I found it well worth the read.

Bekah Hamrick Martin knows the waiting game isn't easy or straight-forward. In The Bare Naked Truth, she lays everything on the table---including some embarrassing moments---as she explores the honest, naked truth behind what God means by purity. With additional entries from popular authors, you'll see the bare naked approach to waiting isn't always easy, but it's worth the risk.

My Review:
Debut author Bekah Martin brings to us a very serious yet pleasant read. She covers topics that many might classify as taboo. Nonetheless, if you are a Christian teenage girl (or even if you aren't) I think you could gain a lot by reading The Bare Naked Truth.

Throughout the book, Bekah shares appropriate scripture and has several of her friends share their personal stories/experiences/testimonies in the hope that we, as the reader, can learn from other people's mistakes and make our own educated decisions. I never once felt being preached at or talked down to. Bekah writes very openly and from the heart. She also makes some excellent points while making me laugh at the same time.

I read The Bare Naked Truth in about four to five hours, just because I couldn't put it down. Bekah really makes you step back and reexamine your plans in a positive way. I'm really glad that I had the chance to review this. Personally, reading the book made me rethink my decisions and plans. I highly recommend it!

Hi, Rosie! Thanks so much for having me on your blog! I am a mom, wife, and writer living in north Alabama. I love chocolate and hanging out with my family. I was once a special education teacher with a degree in special ed. of the hearing impaired from The University of Alabama. I have taught in Georgia and Tennessee, as well as Ukraine and Germany. Now I make paper beads and necklaces with said beads in my spare time, when I’m not writing. And my husband and two daughters keep me grounded and busy.

 
How were you inspired for The Fairest Beauty?
I knew I wanted to write a Snow White story, and I started coming up with the idea about 4 or 5 years ago. While I was working out the plot details a couple of years ago, I would listen to Taylor Swift’s songs, “Love Story” and “Enchanted,” which inspired me a lot.

Will we get to see Duke Wilhelm’s family again?
Yes! You will see Duke Wilhelm and Rose and their children in The Fairest Beauty and in my next book, a Cinderella story called The Captive Maiden. Their second son, Gabe, is the hero in The Fairest Beauty, and their oldest son, Valten, gets his own story when he rescues Cinderella. :)

What movie/TV actors or actresses would you choose to play Sophie and Gabe, if there were to be a movie?
The person who looks the most like Gabe, and of whom I am a big fan, is Dez Duron, who was on the most recent season of The Voice. Dez would be a perfect Gabe! As for Sophie, I really couldn’t find anyone who fit her perfectly, but I guess the closest is Zooey Deschanel.

Is there anything unique or quirky that you do while you write?
When I write, I like to listen to Andrea Bocelli. His songs and his voice sound so romantic, and he sings in Italian, so it doesn’t distract me.
Where is your favorite place to write?
I like to write on my couch at home, but when I’m having a hard time getting the words down, I like to go to a public place like a restaurant or coffee house (even though I don’t drink coffee, only hot tea). For some reason, going to a public place with my laptop forces me to get the words down.

Book Review: Alone Yet Not Alone by Tracy Leininger Craven

My Review: 
A heartwarming quick read!

Alone Yet Not Alone is based on a true story involving the author's ancestors. These true events occur during the French-Indian war, a period in history I have not thoroughly explored. So in some ways, it felt like I was getting an enjoyable history lesson while reading.

The story follows Barbara Leininger as she and her little sister are taken into captivity. Time passes pretty frequently and I kept up with it pretty well. For some reason, I thought for sure Barbara would learn to love being with the Indians. However, my guess was far off. The question that begs to be answered throughout the novel is this: will Barbara ever see her family or her sister again?

Because the length of this book is so short, at times I felt the story seemed rushed. But that didn't take away from Barbara's amazing faith and trust in God through her time with the Indians. She was truly inspiring.

The ending was sweet and warmed my heart. I'd recommend this to readers much younger than I. This book would be great as a read aloud to your family. Amazon suggests 8+. I will be interested to see the movie coming out this April.

Book Review: Chasing Jupiter by Rachel Coker

My Review:
Rachel Coker returns to the fictional scene equipped with an emotion-packed novel that had me glued to the pages!

Chasing Jupiter is her second novel, and I found it to be just as great, if not better than her debut novel, Interrupted: A Life Beyond Words. This time, our setting is in Georgia, 1969 and the central members of our new cast are, Scarlett Blaine, Cliff Blaine, and Frank Leggett.

Scarlett is special, in my opinion. She is able to communicate with Cliff and understand his quirks unlike their parents and the people in their area. She doesn't know why he's the way he is, but she still loves him. She holds so much of the house chores on her shoulders, in this way I can relate to her a bit. I've had a lot of house responsibility on my shoulders before, though not as long as she's had it. At one point, someone asks her why she does so much and she responds with, "Someone has to."

I liked the theme of peaches (peach pie, more peach pie, peach trees, ;D). I don't know why, but I did. I also thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Scarlett and Cliff and occasionally Scarlett and Frank. Rachel does a great job of tossing in enough romance to satisfy her readers, yet keep it to a minimum (no kissing, no dates). That's something I appreciate.

Chasing Jupiter took me off guard more than once with a few twists I hadn't anticipated. I love it when I can't see surprises coming! If you liked her previous work, then you'll surely love this one too.

Book Review: The Fairest Beauty by Melanie Dickerson

My Review:
Another enchanting read from Melanie Dickerson!

The Fairest Beauty revolves around Gabe, son of Rose and Wilhelm (their story was told in The Healer's Apprentice), and Sophie, daughter of Duke Baldwin and betrothed to Gabe's older brother, Valten. Having only read The Healer's Apprentice previously by Melanie, it excited me to know that I'd learn more about Rose and Wilhelm and their family.

This retelling of the story of Snow White (who seems to be quite popular this year!), is fabulously done. It incorporates twists I could have never anticipated and brings the story to life, especially after a year of Snow White movies and shows. I am quite impressed with The Fairest Beauty. The writing and characters meet expectations and the story will pull you in until the last page.

As always, the underlying Christian message slid in like a puzzle piece with Sophie's troubles as well as Gabe's. I really hurt for Sophie as she tried to heal from all of the hurtful lies the evil Duchess spewed at her over the years. It certainly isn't something that occurs overnight! While, Gabe's problems might seem trivial compared to Sophie's they are real. I won't say too much more, I'd hate to spoil a great book like this one!

In conclusion, I really, really, liked Melanie's latest! I'm crossing my fingers as to which fairytale she'll do next! And I secretly hope it will involve Valten. :-)

A wonderful lady I work with told me about a "letter" Nicole Quigley wrote over at the Huffington Post.

If you recall, I reviewed Nicole's debut Like Moonlight at Low Tide a few months ago. It's a wonderful book and deals with many of the issues teens deal with today. Including, a little bit of bullying.

My Review:
A YA mystery that will keep you reading until the last page!

The first in Eddie Jones' new series, The Caden Chronicles, we meet Nick Caden, a cyber super-sleuth. His parents have dragged Nick and his little sister, Wendy, to Deadwood for a wild-west adventurous vacation. To say the least, Nick would rather be in Vegas for a video game convention.

Man, this book is definitely a wild-west mystery! Complete with realistic gun fights, history lesson tours, and...oh yeah, a murder. I've said this before in previous reviews and I'll say it again: I love a book that can keep me guessing. And this book did.

There were a few times throughout the book that I struggled to keep up or something wasn't exactly clear. There were also times I felt like giving Nick a sharp kick for his reckless thinking, but he was still a well developed character. As for Nick's family, Jones made the extra-dysfunctional family pop off the page. The ending left me quite curious about what Jones has planned next.

If you like murder mysteries you'll enjoy this one!

Book Review: Like Moonlight at Low Tide by Nicole Quigley

My Review:
This book is a wonderful read that tapped into my imagination. I could see events play out in my mind's eye. I could feel everything the main character, Melissa, was going through. This book begged for my attention in such a way, that I couldn't put it down!

Ms. Quigley's characters were realistic, relatable, and well rounded. I enjoyed watching Missy and Josh's friendship grow and develop. There were also some moments I could relate with Missy, which made me appreciate the book more.

Another reason I'm so attached to this book is because it's set in Florida, which is where I grew up. Though, I didn't grow up on Anna Maria Island I did grow up near Tampa Bay. I moved away recently from my hometown, and this book gave me a happy at-home feeling that I've missed.

I'd like to note that to make this realistic, Ms. Quigley discussed some teens drinking, including the main character. There was also talk of drugs and overdosing. Nothing is explicit, but some things are implied. I don't disagree with Ms. Quigley's decision to include these things in her novel, because without them the story would seem too fake.

Right now, this book stands as one of my favorites. I highly recommend it to any teen girl.

Book Review: Aldo's Fantastical Movie Palace by Jonathan Friesen

My Review:
A fantastical and magical read! Aldo's Fantastical Movie Palace is perfect fit for those who enjoyed Narnia. Friesen takes you on a journey through Retinya, a spectacular place thought only fiction by Nick and Chloe.

I loved most of Friesen's characters, particularly Chloe, Nob, and Scout. Others may not agree with me, but I didn't really like Nick. It wasn't because of his character structure, he just wasn't all that likable to me. I pitied him greatly, at times, but he still didn't make it to my "favorites" list.

A highlight, for me, is the clear message Friesen presents in Aldo's: The past is important to who we are today. There are some situations that have left an impression on my own character and without them- who would I be?

To close, my last favorite thing to list is Friesen's humor. I loved it. I was chuckling and grinning more than once, and it made the book so much more enjoyable.

Book Review: The Blue Door by Christa Kinde

My Review:
This book was fascinating. I haven't read any fictional books about angels before, for personal reasons. While I understand the Bible doesn't say much about angels, I'm still sensitive with how far people take creative license. I think Kinde did well but there were some things I still was "iffy" on. 

Prissie Pomeroy is an ordinary fourteen year old in a large family. That is, until one day she sees someone no one else can. And this someone is an angel, an observer to be specific, and his name is Koji.

In this fictional world there are many different types of angels, something I heartily agree with. There are messengers, guardians, protectors, observers, caretakers, and so on. Not sure how accurate all these "titles" are, but Ms. Kinde made it seem very plausible. 

I didn't really like some aspects of Prissie. It seemed like she was acting and being treated like a child a few years younger than 14. I don't know, maybe all the fourteen year-olds I know are just more mature than she is. 

I also think Ms. Kinde missed out on a great opportunity to focus more on God than she did. It seemed me the focus was on the angels. Once again, this may just be my opinion. Other than what I mentioned I felt like the story was well written, and while I may not re-read this book I do look forward to reading it's sequel to see what happens next.

I give this book 3 stars.
