{Book Review:} A Bridge Unbroken by Cathy Bryant

My Review:
Another faith-filled, dramatic romance from Bryant!
We return to Miller's Creek once again watching a new story unfold. I love fictional small towns, and Miller's Creek is no exception. The level of familiarity among residents sets off a warm, homey vibe. I particularly liked how much time we spent inside Miller's Creek Community Church. Instead of the story being one of a character coming to Christ, Bryant made it one of a Christian struggling with forgiveness.

Meet Dakota. Or is it Amy? No, wait, it's A.K. Aston...I think. Haha! Whoever this fiery red-head is, she's a wonderful character and she handles herself well, though sometimes she tends to run away when she's afraid. I loved the fact that she was a writer! I also loved watching her go under a subtle transformation as she spent more time with Chance. Chance is a decent lead/hero. I hated it when he let himself be blindsided by his judgement; however, I liked watching him move past his problems.

As a romance novel, I thought A Bridge Unbroken was great, but compared to other romantic suspense novels I have read, this one falls short. It lacked tension and I didn't feel "on edge" until towards the end. Overall, Bryant does a great job weaving romance and Christianity together without it feeling forced or sounding preachy. I recommend this novel to followers of the Miller's Creek series and those looking for a romance novel to read in an afternoon, fifteen years or older.

{Book Review:} Mark of Distinction by Jessica Dotta

First off, I am getting this review up terribly late. My sincerest apologies to Tyndale and Ms. Dotta!! 

My Review:

A lovely story reminiscent of the classics! 

Mark of Distinction is technically the second in a so-far marvelous series. I have not had the privilege of reading the first, but I will be remedying this. That being said, it did take extra effort to get into the story, but once I was sufficiently hooked there was little stopping me from turning the page. Dotta writes a marvelous story in a fresh, new perspective.

At times, my like for Julia, the main character, swung back and forth like a pendulum. I couldn't figure her out! There were times I wanted to comfort her and times I wanted to shake her. This is probably the trait that makes her a good character, no matter how frustrating. She definitely is indecisive and I didn't like some of the choices she made. 

Nonetheless, I have to gush about Isaac for a moment. Talk about the perfect gentleman! I think it's safe to say I much prefer Isaac as a suitor for Julia over Edward; although I haven't read the first book so maybe that will change my opinion. Isaac is pretty awesome though... Ahem, moving on. 

I am truly impressed and in awe with Ms. Dotta's fantastic piece of art. I cannot believe we must wait until next year for the conclusion!! It seems an eternity to wait after such a ending. Before I close out this review, I will say the story had a dark/depressing atmosphere for the whole novel, adding to the Gothic feel. I highly and easily recommend this novel to readers familiar with Bronte and Gothic fiction at least fifteen or older.

Fatal Exchange by Lisa Harris {Revell Blog Tour!}

My Review:
A thrilling, captivating mystery!

What a roller coaster ride! Once you start reading Fatal Exchange the pace picks up and never slows. I loved that. There's nothing quite like curling up on a rainy day with an awesome mystery book and Fatal Exchange fit the bill. I was completely enthralled into the story and was lost in its pages for a couple hours, hardly able to set the book down.

I did not read the previous book in this series, nonetheless, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone. I will say, after I tore through Fatal Exchange, I'll be going back to find Dangerous Passage for certain. Harris writes in a fluid style that leaves you turning pages.

I really, really, liked Emily and Mason. I felt I could relate to certain aspects of their character. They felt so real! I was so thankful for how accurately Emily's emotions were portrayed after everything she went through. I cringe when I read about characters who breeze through life having unrealistic reactions to traumatic events. I also felt Mason's internal struggles were justifiable. I found myself thankful again that his growing relationship with Christ wasn't stilted or forced, rather the opposite. I appreciate Godly characters so much.

The "mystery" and thrill in and of itself was fantastic and different for me, personally. I will definitely be looking up more of Harris's works and digging into Dangerous Passage when I have time. Why, oh, why must we wait until Spring '15 for the next book?? I highly recommend to fellow readers of mystery/thrillers. There really wasn't much romance in the story, but if there had been more than there was, it wouldn't have flowed. I recommend to readers fifteen or older due to the nature of the story. Things to know: There are at least ten murders either mentioned or presented in the story, though not given in grotesque detail. There is a drug cartel.

{Book Review:} Until That Distant Day by Jill Stengl

My Review:
An emotional, intriguing, historical!

Stengl swept me away to 1792 and, in my opinion, accurately captured the unrest and turmoil surrounding the French Revolution. I have not had the privilege of reading any of her previous works, but I am doubly impressed with Until That Distant Day. Her characters, her setting, and her plot all weave together like a beautiful tapestry and I adore it.

Colette, whose lovely head we're in, is relatable in her many struggles and wondering. I can easily imagine myself feeling the same way had I lived back in 1792 Paris, France. This does not mean there were not times I wanted to shake her, or point out the obvious; however if she didn't have her problems, would I like her as much? Not really. In contrast, her brother Pascoe's problems made me dislike him. Now, I don't have a brother, but I did find their relationship interesting. They seemed almost too close, but in the end everything was sorted out.

Moving on, another element of the story I admired was the use of French in dialog sprinkled over the pages. There was never too much that I could not decipher and the glossary at the back was incredibly helpful. For me the language added authenticity and added depth to both the story and characters. I even picked up a few phrases to add to my small knowledge of French. ;-)

All in all, I was thoroughly enjoyed Stengl's return to the fiction scene, and I look forward to seeing what she releases next! The emotion, realism, and twists make it a favorite in my books. Things to know: the majority of the story is set somewhere in the middle of the Revolution, thus there is bloodshed, though nothing extreme. A woman is impregnated outside of wedlock though we do not specifically read about the event. I recommend this novel to historical readers ages fifteen and older for readability and content.

I've been thinking a bit about this question—thank you for asking, Rosie.

The main thing I hope readers will take away from Until That Distant Day is that indefinable blend of euphoria and sorrow I feel after reading my very favorite books. I hope my characters will remain in a reader’s thoughts as if they were real people, along with their desire for purpose, hope, and a future. I hope the scenes and setting will remain like memories of personal experience in a reader’s mind. I hope these characters and their relationships will not blend in with those of a dozen or a hundred other books.

In short, I hope readers will remember my story and wish to read it again. Isn't this every author’s desire?

Hello, all! I have some fun, exciting things for you today! We'll start off with my review of Pettrey's awesome new release, Silenced.

My Thoughts:
WOW!

With each new release, I fall more and more in love with the McKenna family. After reading Stranded last fall, I was eager to read Kayden and Jake's story and I was not disappointed! The suspense combined with many unanswered questions pulsed the story onward at a fast clip. In the few times I had to put the book down, it left me feeling like I was going to miss something, as if the story would go on without me.

I try not to pick favorites, but Kayden has intrigued me from the first book, Submerged. I wondered what she guarded under her tough, stubborn exterior. Her character is simply intriguing. Jake equally so, once his past was revealed in the previous book. The reason, I think, that Jake and Kayden work well together, both as romantic interests and lead characters, is that they battle inner demons. They're realistic. They aren't perfect. They don't have it all figured out. They struggle just like the rest of us.

The mystery and suspense was well paced and the road to the end was twisty and full of sharp curves. I never felt bored. I will say I had figured out the murderer, but I never anticipated... Oh. You'll have to get your hands on your own copy. ;-)

I really, really, enjoyed this time spent with Kayden and Jake. We also spent some considerable time with Reef and Kirra, which I loved, given their story is next and the last in the Alaskan Courage series (something I have yet to fully admit to myself). Oh, and the best part about Silenced? We get to witness Cole and Bailey's wedding AND Landon and Piper's!! Gah! So much cuteness. I loved Silenced and now I eagerly await the unannounced title for the conclusion in Pettrey's brilliant series. Things to know: There's talk of murder. There are two or three accidents- neither of which are described great detail. Two characters dislocate their thumbs to escape handcuffs and then relocate them.... OUCH. I recommend to readers who don't mind a bit of minor "violence."

My Review:
A fun conclusion to the Paige Alder series!

I was thrilled to read and review Paige Turned after I enjoyed Paige Rewritten back in November. The saddest part about returning to Paige's world is knowing that it's for the last time. I didn't want the book to end! I can honestly say that I had no idea how Mangum would wrap things up for us. Am I pleased with the end result? Not entirely, but that's only because I suspected a different outcome. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything, but Mangum did offer us a positive ending.

Moving past my personal minor disappointment, Paige's hilarious personality kept me smiling throughout. I adore her character in so many ways. Not only that but I could also relate with many of Paige's internal struggles, especially having struggled myself. I liked how she eventually answered her questions using Scripture.

If the previous books were three quarters of Paige's journey, this book completes it in a beautiful way. I will definitely miss further adventures with Paige, but I will be certain to reread her books every now and then. Mangum has done a wonderful job crafting Paige and writing from the first person POV. The supporting cast are completely their own, though we see them mostly through Paige's eyes. I am really impressed with Mangum's skill. I readily recommend this book to teens fifteen and older.

{Book Review:} Caught in the Middle by Regina Jennings

My Review:
A fun western from Jennings!

OK, so maybe I can't classify Caught in the Middle a western per se, but I loved the historical edge to this novel. I'm saddened to say I've missed out on Jennings' prior releases, but after enjoying Nick and Anne's story, I intend to go back and read them. "Old" fans I'm certain will be excited for a quick glimpse of Molly & Bailey living out their happily ever after.

The heart and soul of what molded Anne into the woman she is, is slowly revealed to us through the novel. It's heartbreaking and it saddens me to know that many women can probably relate to Anne's former predicament. Anne's internal journey is amazing and in my opinion, well handled. I won't go into detail-you'll have to read the book-but it could be well worth your time.

Nick was a character I adored as a writer. In a sense, he was perfectly flawed. I loved that. I also loved how he would call out Anne's flaws and she'd return the favor. They worked fantastically well together, though they may have disagreed with that assessment at one point or another.

I loved this novel for so many reasons, several of which I've shared. Jennings offers us a novel with heart, and I don't say that lightly. This book is definitely going on my keeper shelf as a new favorite. I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical novels and raw characters with an emotional depth. I suggest this book to readers fifteen or older do to flashbacks of an abusive husband and a mention of murder.

{Book Review:} Death by the Book by Julianna Deering

My Review:
An amazing follow-up!

I love sequels that follow the same characters we met in the first. Sequels are a great opportunity to further character development and as a bonus we get to spend more time with our favorite characters! Win-win scenario, right? Once again I found myself impressed with the vivid settings and the tangibility of Deering's characters.

Drew was a model hero, yet again. His continued integrity and honor towards Madeline warmed my heart. Aunt Ruth had nothing to worry about. ;-) Time and time again, Drew proved himself a gentleman even when met with discourteous individuals. This is probably what makes him such an attractive lead. He isn't without his flaws, but I think it's fair to say that Drew has learned from plenty of mistakes in his past.

I don't have too much to say about Madeline, but I will say I admired her patience with her stubborn aunt. I also really liked her unwillingness to rush into marriage. I thought it was a wise decision on her part and realistic. After all, you don't go out and marry someone you just met.

As far as the mystery goes, Deering did a wonderful job yet again. I was constantly guessing throughout the book and then I made conclusions alongside Drew. I love it when I can be surprised, and Mrs. Deering did just that. Overall I loved the book and I can't wait to return to Farthering St. John! I highly recommend to fans of mysteries, ages fifteen and older due to some minor violence.

{Book Review:} The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn by Lori Benson

My Review:
Wow!
The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn is Lori Benson's sophomore novel, but it is my first novel I've read by her. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Generally I don't go for novels set in the late 1700s, but knowing Benton's debut was highly praised, I snatched up the chance to review it. Goodness, I'm glad I did! Benson's writing style is so fluid and the effort she put into research is obvious- but the information isn't shoved in your face. It was presented as the need arose.

There are so many reasons I adored Tamsen and Jesse, but I'll only mention a few each. I'll start with Tamsen. That girl is so strong! And I'm not talking about physical prowess here. She may have felt in shambles, or even like porcelain, for a couple weeks but she persevered. She never gave up. Jesse was a perfect hero. No, I don't mean his character wasn't flawed but the guy had his priorities straight. He was willing to give up Tamsen if God told him to. I love the trust he expressed and willingness to follow God's will.

All I can really say is: wow. I will definitely be going back and reading Burning Sky in the near future, no questions asked. Benton has an addictive style writing that captivates you until the last page. This one's a keeper! I recommend to readers ages fifteen and older who enjoy the late 1700s American setting. I also recommend to those looking for an inspirational read.

Has it Really Been Two Years? {Writings of Rosie's Second Anniversary!}

Wow! I can hardly believe it's been two years since I began blogging. Originally I started out for the books, but since then I have come to befriend and value the people I encounter daily on the Internet. I have gotten so much out of this experience in just two years that I get so excited to think about the years to come. My dreams are big. The possibilities are endless. I'm reaching for the sky!

It is a delight blogging and promoting Godly Christian fiction. I am eager to do more of it, however, as several of you might have noticed, I am backing off from book reviews for a couple months. Too easily I find my schedule clogged and myself overwhelmed. Thus it's time for things to change. Does this mean I will no longer be doing book reviews? Absolutely not! I love reading and I love the interaction I have with publishers and authors alike. This does mean that I will be slowing things down in the coming months and that I shall be introducing more posts about my thoughts and of life in general. One day it is my desire to have a balance of both book reviews and regular, casual, blogging. But I'm afraid that dream is still several months off.

So to celebrate the blog's second birthday (albeit a week late...) Writings of Rosie shall be hosting another book swap beginning Wednesday (April 16th). {Book Review:} Love Comes Calling by Siri Mitchell

My Review:
A charming novel set in the Roaring Twenties!

I was swept back in time to the interesting era known as the Roaring Twenties in Mitchell's new book, Love Comes Calling. I loved seeing the events and culture filtered through Ellis. I personally think Mitchell did a fantastic job capturing the feel of the times as well as portraying characters that mold to their surroundings. Places, characters, they all jumped off the page and played out like a movie in my imagination.

Ellis is easily distracted. This annoyed me at first but as I pushed further into the story I accepted that this was Ellis's personal quirk. I had no idea until I read the author's note at the end what was behind it. But all quirks aside, Ellis believes so many lies about herself. I ached for her over and over, especially after encounters with her family. I think she's a great example of a self-fulfilling prophecy. She believed she couldn't do anything right and thus she never could. You have to have confidence in yourself.

This is my first read from Mitchell and it definitely won't be the last! I'm very impressed with Mitchell's writing style and I loved meeting her characters. I have another of her books on my shelf, waiting to be read. I think I'll double my efforts to get to it soon. ;-) I recommend this book to readers fifteen and older. As far as content to know about, this is a book set in the Roaring Twenties and both drinking and smoking is mentioned consistently. There is also mention of an indiscretion before marriage.

Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter {Litfuse Blog Tour!}

My Review:
An irresistible, endearing story!

I could hardly put this one down! What a lovely, lovely, story. Dancing with Fireflies greatly exceeded all my expectations. I loved it. Absolutely brilliant! Hunter's characters jump off the page, feeling as real as you or me. This trait is important to me as a reader and Hunter executes it wonderfully. I thought I liked Barefoot Summer well enough, but Dancing with Fireflies takes number one slot for the series so far. It will be hard for me to like The Wishing Season (coming Winter '14!) better than this one.

Jade annoyed me at times, but I think she was supposed to. She did some stupid things, though I cannot say someone in her position wouldn't do the same. I admired her determination to rise above her circumstances and take on responsibility. In fact, she rose to the challenge despite her fatigue.

Daniel is the dependable, tender friend that Jade needed. I always thought they would be a good couple, even before Jade knew. I loved how their relationship was built on years of friendship. All in all, I liked the guy. It helped that we have similar tastes in music... *ahem*

Dancing with Fireflies blew me away. I loved every page! Plus, who doesn't mind a trip to Chapel Springs or a visit with the McKinleys? It was fantastic to see Beckett and Madison tie the knot and equally fantastic to see PJ and Ryan again. I look forward to whichever McKinley is up next!

Summer of Joy by Ann H. Gabhart {Revell Blog Tour!}

My Review:
A cute release from Gabhart!

I have not had the pleasure to read the previous books in this series, but I did very much enjoy getting to know the Brooke family. It was hard for me to get into the book at first due to the frequent head jumping early on. Thankfully, this got better as the book continued. I'm glad I stuck to it. I cannot say this was a favorite though.

Jocie is probably my favorite part about this novel. She's so endearing, cute, and determined. Leigh is my next favorite, a very close second to Jocie. Leigh's sweet disposition and kind spirit made her incredibly likable from the beginning. I didn't feel quite as connected with the other characters. This might be because I haven't read the others in the series.

Again this hardly is a favorite, but I love the homey feel Gabhart brings to the settings in each of her novels. It's a similar thread in her stories, one I'm quite fond of. Oh, as a quick note, I thought Hammond was a complete stalker-ish creep, though I suppose that is what Gabhart was going for. I hope we will see more of Hollyhill and the Brooke family before too long. I recommend this book to readers fourteen and older and especially to those looking for a comfortable read.

My Review:

An interesting collection of romantic short stories.

 

This is the first anthology I've read and I can't say I'm too impressed. Generally when it comes to romance I want something realistic and a couple of these stories, due to their short length, did not come through. I was very glad for the few that were spread across a certain amount of time. This is just my personal preference, though. If you're the type whose insides turn to mush at good love story than you'll love this anthology. 

That all being said, I want to take a paragraph or two to talk about my three favorites in this collection. I really liked The Rambler's Bride by Linda Goodnight despite the bull-headed hero. Given the 1800s western setting, I liked the "fast-paced" romance between leads. It fit the period like a glove. 

My next favorite was Necessary Proof by Camy Tang. The suspense and thrill was amazing! I liked how the leads built friendship and trust before they headed down any romantic path. 

My last favorite in the collection was, ironically, the last in the collection, Kissed by a Cowboy by Lacy Williams. I loved how the romance was tested by time and how they got to know each other.

In sum, I cannot say I'll be picking up another anthology anytime soon, they just aren't my slice of pie. I am glad I read this one, though, and I enjoyed the stories I mentioned above. I recommend to avid romance readers fifteen and older.

Do Not Be Afraid, for I Am with You...

Not too long ago (2-3 years), I struggled with testing anxiety. ((For those who don't know, I'm enrolled in a program called CollegePlus!. Part of the program generally means taking CLEP exams and DANTES.)) You see, after failing a couple times, the whole process terrified me.

After my second fail, I was shaken to the core. I did not want to reenter that testing center only to fail again. My pride was bruised and my confidence was battered. The pressure I put on myself was nearly unbearable. I didn't know what to do. I felt like I was drowning, so we took a break. I was in the middle of some co-op classes, and we were preparing to move. It made sense. I took a total of nine months off. When it came time to start back up, the anxiety returned. I purposefully postponed taking tests and I wasn't diligent in my studies. 

I know what you're thinking. If I wasn't working hard, how was I supposed to pass? To be honest, I don't have a reasonable explanation for you. Fear messes with your head. I'm ashamed to say I let it take up residence for too long. I went along with this study method for about four months when the inevitable happened. I failed for a third time, except this time the blow was harder. Because I had failed it once already. 

I cried the whole way home. This time though, I was determined to make a change. I was determined to work as hard as I could to pass every exam from that moment on. I called on multiple verses to encourage me, particularly Phil. 1:6 and John 14:27. I drove fear out of my mind and spoke life. (Prov. 18:21) I drew closer to the greatest Comforter of all and since then, I haven't failed once. 

Thankfully, with time I have found a working method for my studies. I also found God's peace to be calming and assuring under the pressure of passing. Without Him, I don't think I would have made it this far. He's worked miracles in me and I am eternally grateful.

To kind of draw this post to a close, the moral of this story-if you haven't already guessed-is this: Don't let fear in. Fear is not of God. He doesn't want it for you or me. He told us to be strong and courageous for He is with us. I have learned it is better in the end to lean on Him when I am weary and to cast my cares on Him when I am burdened. It makes all the difference.

"It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."

 I didn't know what to expect - I am not a fan of anthologies. Usually I find that the stories are too brief and the plots move too fast and don't go into any detail and don't make a lot of sense. Well, let me tell you that this anthology is not like this, not at all. It is wonderful! I enjoyed each of the novellas immensely. Each one has well developed, thought out characters and detailed plots that move at exactly the right pace. You have suspense, romance - everything in each of the novels. I enjoyed reading each of the novellas and couldn't put the book down.
