If you've never participated in a book swap before don't worry, it's simple. Find books that you own that you are willing to swap and post a list as well as your wishlist. Has it Really Been Two Years? {Writings of Rosie's Second Anniversary!}
Wow! I can hardly believe it's been two years since I began blogging. Originally I started out for the books, but since then I have come to befriend and value the people I encounter daily on the Internet. I have gotten so much out of this experience in just two years that I get so excited to think about the years to come. My dreams are big. The possibilities are endless. I'm reaching for the sky!
It is a delight blogging and promoting Godly Christian fiction. I am eager to do more of it, however, as several of you might have noticed, I am backing off from book reviews for a couple months. Too easily I find my schedule clogged and myself overwhelmed. Thus it's time for things to change. Does this mean I will no longer be doing book reviews? Absolutely not! I love reading and I love the interaction I have with publishers and authors alike. This does mean that I will be slowing things down in the coming months and that I shall be introducing more posts about my thoughts and of life in general. One day it is my desire to have a balance of both book reviews and regular, casual, blogging. But I'm afraid that dream is still several months off.
So to celebrate the blog's second birthday (albeit a week late...) Writings of Rosie shall be hosting another book swap beginning Wednesday (April 16th). Feel free to come by the blog Wednesday morning to post your lists, take a look at mine, and start swapping! [U.S. participants only, please. Sorry!]

I didn't know what to expect - I am not a fan of anthologies. Usually I find that the stories are too brief and the plots move too fast and don't go into any detail and don't make a lot of sense. Well, let me tell you that this anthology is not like this, not at all. It is wonderful! I enjoyed each of the novellas immensely. Each one has well developed, thought out characters and detailed plots that move at exactly the right pace. You have suspense, romance - everything in each of the novels. I enjoyed reading each of the novellas and couldn't put the book down. Even though I have about 15 other books waiting to be read - I plan on reading this book all over again in the next week or so - it is just that good. - Amazon reader

{Book Review:} Songstone by Lena Goldfinch
My Review:An intense island tale!
I love, love, love the imagery and beauty within every novel or novella I have read from Goldfinch. It awakens the imagination and immerses you into the story. This quality makes Goldfinch's books stand out in a great way. But scenery aside, the rest of the novel was good too.
Kita, whose head we are in for the duration of Songstone, embarks on both an internal and an external journey. Overall I felt it was well written, given the circumstances Kita had to overcome. She's the kind of character you root for and hurt alongside with. That being said, I loathed Matiko. If you want me to despise a villain, then make him a voo-doo, black magic, healer/priest.
Let's talk about Matiko. Yes, as I stated above he dabbles frequently in black magic using Kita's blood most of the time. He uses a spell to restrain her while he steals her blood. Not very much, but a few drops at a time. This disturbed me more than I thought it would. Due to the high amounts of this black magic, I wish we could have seen more of a light to contrast the darkness. Unlike her previous books, God wasn't as present in this one as the others, which disappointed me a bit. I definitely caution readers for this one because, understandably, this topic isn't for everyone.
I'll wrap up this review talking about Pono and then my general summary. He was really endearing, albeit incredibly frustrating/confusing at times. I loved how he honored his word. Integrity is so very admirable in any character. Songstone is described as dark tale mixed with romance and adventure, and that description is very accurate. However the amount of black magic we see and the lack of a clear light against the dark bothered me. I recommend to teens fifteen and older who are looking for an adventure.

{Book Review:} Aire by Lena Goldfinch
My Review:Another fantastic fantasy novel from Goldfinch!
As I sit here reflecting on Aire, I find myself utterly in awe. Once again, Goldfinch does a superb job hooking me, the reader, into her marvelous world. I loved the way she weaved bits Italian culture into Isalla. In fact, that was probably my favorite part about this fantasy-land. The attention to detail really brought the customs and culture of the three kingdoms right off the page.
Anna is definitely the kind of heroine we look for in fantasies. She's strong, but not physically. She's independent, but she still submits to her Grandmother's authority (most of the time). Best of all, her flaws are not hidden from us. I can't think of anything negative to say about her. :-)
Ilan is the type of character you love then hate and then love again. For the longest time I wasn't sure where he fit in the big picture, but I'm happy with his outcome. I liked Jovanni but at the same time, he annoyed me a little. In regards to his relationship with Anna, I thought he might have been a bit too forward. But this is just my opinion. I confess I did like Ilan a lot at first. Perhaps I'm biased...
In sum, I'm not one to read a lot of fantasies. I enjoy them but they aren't a favorite. I'm happy to say Goldfinch is making me reconsider. The way she weaves God into her stories is amazing and very well done. I will definitely be looking for more fantasy novels from Goldfinch in the future. I recommend this book to readers fourteen and older and especially to ardent fantasy fans.

{Book Review:} The Language of Souls by Lena Goldfinch
My Review:A fantastic release from Goldfinch!
I was immediately intrigued by this novella the moment I read the back cover copy. It only took three pages for me to be sucked into Goldfinch's bright, intricate, fantasy world. I was surprised and impressed at the depth Goldfinch was able to offer, given the limited length. There was just enough description to make things real without overdoing it.
Solena and Rundan are great characters, but I felt the romance between them was unrealistically fast. I understand the circumstances surrounding it but it still felt a tad rushed. Just my opinion. As far as their personalities and culture go, they seemed realistic given the world they live in. I wish the story could have been longer so Goldfinch could have gone into more detail about their religion. Goodness, I wish the story could have been longer, period.
If you are looking for a sweet, quick, feel-good read you'll find it in The Language of the Souls. I recommend this novella to young adult readers. For things to know, you ought to be aware that Solena and Rundan sleep beside each other for body heat but nothing happens.

{Book Review:} Sixteen by Emily Rachelle
My Review:A marvelous debut from Emily Rachelle!
Last week, Emily stopped by to share with us the theme of Sixteen. Today I'm excited to share with you my thoughts on her novella. Simply put, Sixteen is about a mother telling her daughter a story about her mistakes.
Despite the fact it's short, Emily did a wonderful job making us care about the characters. That being said, many teens can probably relate to Nicole, or Nikki as we come to know her. I can't say that I did. I'm afraid I relate more to Christy in this instance, (haha!) but I can say that I'm proud of how Nikki responded when faced with the consequences of her actions.
I thought the ending was a bit unrealistic, but that's just my opinion. The rest of the story was delightful. I read it in one sitting. My favorite scene has to be near the end between Christy and Nikki. I won't spoil it though, so you'll have to grab a copy for yourself! ;-) If you're looking for a quick read that will leave you feeling good, you ought to give Sixteen a shot. I recommend it to girls fourteen and older. (Nikki sleeps with a guy, though we are not given any details, and as a result there is a pregnancy.)

Sixteen by Emily Rachelle {Guest Post!}

In a previous post in this tour -- “The Story Behind Sixteen” -- I touched on all the different themes this story has taken on and discarded through the writing and editing process. The one that held on to the end is that of mother-daughter relationships. Fitting, considering the story’s original intent as a Mother’s Day gift.
The story focuses on a girl in 1995 named Nikki Johnson. She loves dance, hates wearing red, and hasn’t gotten along with her mother for years. Mrs. Johnson is too uptight, too overbearing, too perfectionist and my-way-or-the-highway. Nikki just doesn’t understand her, and she’s certain her mom knows nothing about her.
However, this isn’t the only mother-daughter relationship spotlighted in the book. The opening scene doesn’t actually introduce us to Nikki -- the first character we meet is Claire. She’s spunky and wild, as much a rebel on the outside as Nikki is inside, with her short purple hair and shredded jeans. Her mom isn’t quite the issue Nikki’s is, but they’re not always on the best of terms, either.
My mom and I have always gotten along better than any other teen girls and their mothers that I know. So why would I write a story like this -- and focus on such tension-filled relationships?
Honestly, I don’t know why. I just know this story came from something bigger than me. The more I learn about my friends’ relationships with my mom, the more shocked I am. Stereotypes of teen-to-mom relationships seem mild in comparison to real-life tales shared in the restroom while adjusting hair or fixing lip gloss. And this is coming from a homeschooled church girl! How crazy must life outside “the sheltered” be?
I don’t want to give away spoilers, but as with any story’s conflict, Sixteen does end with both Nikki and Claire on a different page with their mothers than they started. (Pun totally intended.) My friends’ stories of constant ‘momma drama’ tugged at me, in not a good way. I guess part of me hopes moms will get insight into their daughters’ heads, and fellow daughters will see there is hope for peace, in reading my book.

In a previous post in this tour -- “The Story Behind Sixteen” -- I touched on all the different themes this story has taken on and discarded through the writing and editing process. The one that held on to the end is that of mother-daughter relationships. Fitting, considering the story’s original intent as a Mother’s Day gift.
The story focuses on a girl in 1995 named Nikki Johnson. She loves dance, hates wearing red, and hasn’t gotten along with her mother for years. Mrs. Johnson is too uptight, too overbearing, too perfectionist and my-way-or-the-highway. Nikki just doesn’t understand her, and she’s certain her mom knows nothing about her.
However, this isn’t the only mother-daughter relationship spotlighted in the book. The opening scene doesn’t actually introduce us to Nikki -- the first character we meet is Claire. She’s spunky and wild, as much a rebel on the outside as Nikki is inside, with her short purple hair and shredded jeans. Her mom isn’t quite the issue Nikki’s is, but they’re not always on the best of terms, either.
My mom and I have always gotten along better than any other teen girls and their mothers that I know. So why would I write a story like this -- and focus on such tension-filled relationships?
Honestly, I don’t know why. I just know this story came from something bigger than me. The more I learn about my friends’ relationships with my mom, the more shocked I am. Stereotypes of teen-to-mom relationships seem mild in comparison to real-life tales shared in the restroom while adjusting hair or fixing lip gloss. And this is coming from a homeschooled church girl! How crazy must life outside “the sheltered” be?
I don’t want to give away spoilers, but as with any story’s conflict, Sixteen does end with both Nikki and Claire on a different page with their mothers than they started. (Pun totally intended.) My friends’ stories of constant ‘momma drama’ tugged at me, in not a good way. I guess part of me hopes moms will get insight into their daughters’ heads, and fellow daughters will see there is hope for peace, in reading my book.

Another Year Gone... {Top Thirteen Books of 2013!}
Wow! I can hardly believe another year has gone by and that 2013 is almost over! It has been SUCH a great year for the blog and I have all of you, my dear readers, to thank for that.
Ah, 2013. Even when I think things can't get any better they do. That's just how my God works. {Rom. 8:28} Don't take this to mean I don't have growing pains, because I do. And when I do, I have made a habit of leaning on the One Who holds me in His hand. He is my Peace. He is the One I trust. {John 14:27} In this past year, He picked up my broken pieces and called me to forgive. He repaired the broken vessel I had become and called me to trust. He molded me into something new and called me His own. {2 Cor. 5:17} He is my Rock and my Refuge, to whom I owe everything.
2013 has been another busy year filled with memories and friends, new and old, and of course, family. I've been stretched beyond my capabilities in ways I would not have expected in 2012. It's been a year of healing, forgiveness, growth, and happiness, and that's just my personal life! In the past six or so months, God has blessed and continues to bless this blog in ways I couldn't anticipate.
Moving forward, I'm eager to see what this new year brings. I look forward to meeting more people, more bloggers, and talking with more authors. I look forward to expanding my blog posts to include more snippets of my life. I look forward to sharing more of my writing journey in the months to come. But most importantly, I look forward to shining my light. If 2013 was a great year, I cannot begin to imagine what 2014 will bring!
So, to close I bring you my top thirteen favorite books released this year (in no particular order). All of these books are marvelous and I love all of them in different ways. Some as a writer, others as a reader, and the rest simply as a human being. ;-D

{Book Review:} Stranded by Dani Pettrey (Giveaway!!)
My Review:
A fantastic new release from Pettrey!
It seems like it was yesterday I was giddy over the release of Shattered, and now here we are with the release of Stranded, the third in the Alaskan Courage series. Is it just me, or do Dani's books get better with each release? I mean, I really enjoyed Submerged and Shattered was even better, but I think Stranded takes the cake...for the time being, that is. We still have two more books after all. ;-)
Darcy St. James is awesome, and not only because of her name. She takes her faith seriously when it comes to her journalism by setting boundaries she refuses to cross. I loved how unwilling she was to compromise her values for undercover work. While Bailey still holds my number one favorite heroine spot, Darcy did come so close to topping her. After the brief glimpses we got with Kayden and Jake, I have a strong suspicion Kayden will try fight her way to the top of my favorites too.
Ever since Submerged, I've been curious to get to know Gage. In short, he is a hurting man running from God. Nothing about his healing felt forced or rushed. In fact, the pace read right. Though at first his faith is lacking, he makes up for it with good character. I adore his relationship with his family and the seriousness with which he takes his job. I look forward to seeing more of he and Darcy in Dani's future books.
To finish up, this is a wonderful novel! I was constantly guessing, and though I had some things right in the end, I had others wrong. The heightened suspense in the final hundred pages, glued me to the story until the end. I cannot wait to see what else is in store for this amazing family. I'm eagerly looking forward to Silenced! I recommend Stranded to ages 16 and up for mention of sex trafficking.

Finding Balance // Happy Labor Day!
Labor Day is a fun weekend around our house because my birthday is on the third. It always sneaks up on me and then I find myself wondering where the past year has gone.
Who knew so much could happen in a mere twelve months?
I've built friendships, made memories, I've cried, I've laughed, I've struggled, and I've grown. The journey I'm on will never be easy and in the past few months I have fought to find a balance between blogging, my college studies, my writing, and life. Some of you may have noticed my fluctuating presence but I assure you, I'm not going anywhere.
Actually, you'll probably be seeing more posts in the next few months as my studies wrap up for the year and I have more time on my hands. In the meantime, I have been working hard to balance my responsibilities and I'd like to believe I'm almost there.
Finding balance with my time hasn't been easy, but I have discovered that for me it is essential. There is less, if any, stress involved and it is easier for me to relax and enjoy my family. I highly encourage anyone with a busy schedule to reflect on ways to enjoy life in the midst of the craziness.
It's hard to put into words all that I have learned, experienced, and so forth this past year. As I look toward this new year of growth, I am eager to see what God has in store.
